Oncology

In Turkey cancer is diagnosed and treated via multi-disciplinary approach. For treatment of cancer, surgical methods, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy are used depending on stage and type of the cancer. During and after the treatment, patients are encouraged to take part in decision making of their treatment process and are also provided with pain treatment and psychological support.

Medical Oncology is a branch of science that covers the treatment of cancer patients as well as cancer prevention, cancer screening and early diagnosis practices.

There is cooperation between cancer diagnosis and treatment and the field of radiology. The approach to the patients has been planned in a multidisciplinary manner in line with scientific data.

Planning treatment in Medical Oncology; It is shaped according to the cell type of the cancer, the organ where it was first seen and the areas where it spread.

Medical Oncology Treatments

Chemotherapy; Chemotherapy aims to destroy cancer cells that grow uncontrollably.

Hormone Therapy; Hormonal drugs are used in the treatment of hormonal sensitive tumors such as breast and prostate cancers.

Immunotherapy; It is treatment with the immune system. Substances produced naturally by the immune system are used to identify and kill cancerous cells by stimulating the body's immune system.

Targeted Biological Therapy; One of the most important developments of the last 10 years has been the development of biological treatments. It is a form of treatment with relatively little side effects, and it identifies targets found in cancerous cells but not normal cells.

Radiation oncology examines the effects on cancer through the use of radiation and the behavior of tumors and covers research in this area. There are two application areas, radiotherapy and radiosurgery.

Radiotherapy (X-Ray Therapy)

Radiotherapy is defined as the treatment of cancerous cells or some non-malignant tumors with radiation. This treatment is also known as x-ray therapy.

Application Areas of Radiotherapy

Curative Radiotherapy;

It is applied when the patient can be completely cured in the light of the information about the disease. It can be applied alone or with surgery and chemotherapy.

Palliative Radiotherapy;

It is applied in cases where it is impossible to completely eradicate the disease. The aim of treatment is to prevent pain, relieve pain and improve quality of life.

Surgical Treatment with Rays; Radiosurgery

The main purpose of treatment is to direct the low energy beam to the diseased area. The goal is to shrink or kill cancerous cells with intense rays while protecting the surrounding healthy tissues from the harmful effects of radiation.

Techniques Used in Radiation Oncology Applications

IGRT; Image guided radiotherapy

IMRT; Intensity adjusted radiotherapy

Conformal Radiotherapy; 3D Conformal radiotherapy

SRS / SRT; Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is the complete destruction of the tumor with high dose radiation in a single session. When this treatment is applied in more than one session (3 or 5 sessions), it is called stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT).

RapidArc; By reducing the length of radiotherapy sessions from 15-30 minutes to 2 minutes

It is an advanced technology that provides more comfort and convenience for the patient.

Brachytherapy; It is a treatment method used to increase local control by increasing the radiation dose applied to the tumor before and after external radiotherapy.

Single Dose Radiation Therapy; It is the treatment that is started at least 3 weeks after surgery, preferably after chemotherapy in patients who need a single dose of radiotherapy or in patients who only receive hormone therapy.

Devices Used in Radiology Oncology;

Trilogy; The trilogy device allows the experts to make the right intervention in the shortest time and at the ideal rate. The patient gets the right treatment as soon as possible.

MRIdian®: The world's first radiotherapy device with an integrated MRI for image guidance. Provides continuous and real-time imaging before, during and after treatment.

Trubeam®; It is a system that protects healthy tissues and organs while treating cancer accurately and quickly. The most important feature of Truebeam is that it can provide faster, more effective and safer treatment.

CyberKnife®: It is a robotic radiosurgery system that can be treated with extremely precise precision even within a millimeter. With this system, the cancerous area in the brain or body can be treated in high doses by using radiation rays focal. In this procedure, healthy tissues can be protected against the side effects of radiation at the maximum level.

Gamma Knife; It is one of the stereotactic intracranial radiosurgery techniques used in this practice to treat brain tumors and other brain abnormalities as part of radiation therapy. In this application, targeted tissues receive a very high dose of radiation in a single session. The purpose of this treatment is; stopping the growth of the tumor.

Application Areas of Surgical Treatment;

Curative surgery is also applied within the scope of surgical oncology. However, the prerequisite for performing curative surgery is that the disorder is limited to the organ or lymph nodes where the disorder first occurred. Tumors can be completely removed from patients if their borders are well defined. However, there are situations where the tumor cannot be completely removed. In such cases, mass removal surgery can be applied to minimize the volume. Removing the few metastases increases the patient's chances of a healthy recovery.

Robotic Surgery with "Da Vinci"

Laparoscopic operations performed with the "Da Vinci" surgical robot are defined as Robotic Surgery. These operations provide great advantages to the patient. Besides the common advantages of all laparoscopic operations such as less pain, minimizing skin scars, shorter hospital stays; There is less bleeding and the success rate of the operation is higher. “Da Vinci” robotic surgery is performed especially in these important areas; Gynecology, Gynecological Oncology, Urology, Cardiovascular Surgery, General Surgery and Ear-Nose-Throat surgery are the main ones.
